Goodbye, Valkyrie
I’ve always been an ardent fan of Macross animes (well, maybe not all. Macross 7 just didn’t work for me). And the conclusion for the Macross Frontier movie, Sayonara no Tsubasa (translated as Wings of Goodbye) felt more like a massive homage to all the Macross animes over the years.
The salute that Hikaru Ichijo gives to Misa Hayase just before the assault on the Zentraedi mobile fortress from Macross: Do You Remember Love.
Isamu and his YF-19 from Macross Plus makes a guest appearance, with the S.M.S. logo strapped onto it. It makes sense, given how it is also a prototype fighter.
During the Alcatraz break-out scene, the S.M.S. members take a cue from Fire Bomber, calling themselves Love Bomber and providing supporting music for Ranka Lee.
And most importantly, the damn triangle between Alto, Ranka and Sheryl gets resolved. Well, not exactly, given how he didn’t finish saying his last word to Sheryl before the hybrid Vajra Queen / Battle Frontier folded out right before the fleet of Macross Quarters tried to blast it with the Macross Cannon.
Oh yes, a whole fleet of Macross battleships. In a scene of irony, the fleet is now attacking an Earth-like planet and trying to wipe out its inhabitants, against the first movie when the Zentraedi battle fleet folded in and decimated Earth.
