Living the Tech Live on the Verge
Over the last week, while I was feeding the mosquitoes with an endless buffet of blood (from yours truly), The Verge was launched.
Formed by Engadget’s previous Editor-in-Chief, Joshua Topolsky (whom I saw at Mobile World Congress 2010) and his merry men and women of technology journalists, the new technology news site is one of my inspirations and example to follow when it comes to news reporting.
While everyone’s raving over its design and layout, I found it hauntingly familiar to a particular WordPress theme. Nonetheless, the site is definitely impressive, and they’ve taken the forums approach aggresively to aggregate their viewers’ comments for easy reading and reply. And that got me wondering , if my publication can emulate the same formula since our forums have the highest hit rate (though mostly in areas outside of technology news).
With one week in the camp, I’ve had a lot of time to think of ideas, some of which wouldn’t have formed if I was busy rushing to file stories. Meanwhile, I’m glad to see that the new team is making a lot of progress. Hiccups are inevitable, and I’m still finding my way around to manage work load and more importantly, expectations. But this is probably the best time for me to really branch out and conceptualize new ideas and proposals to enhance the site.
And honestly, with two weeks out of the office, the wordsmith in me got a fresh charge, and I feel the words flowing much better as I type this. Just goes to show that we all need a break once in a while, to rid ourselves of the writer’s block.
